Just when you thought everything was trucking along - BAM, life throws you curve balls!
At our 20 week ultrasound, it was discovered that this baby has multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) on the right hand side (a condition that leaves the kidney non-functional). See link for more information.
It has been a rough week and we have had a lot to process but we have reasons to stay positive:
2. The baby's bladder was full
3. We were told that heart, lungs and spine and left kidney are all healthy
4. Heart was beating at 140bpm (which is normal)
5. You can live on one kidney
And even though we are trying SO HARD to keep faith and stay positive- you are still haunted by the “what if” and “possible”.
We were also told that if the cysts continue to not grow, that there is a possibility that the kidney may still function up to 30% on it's right side. The doctor said that “sometimes the human body has a way of working around obstacles”. Well… that was positive news!!!
I was told my follow up plan mainly consists of after birth ultrasound (within the first week of life) and maybe antibiotics for while we run tests to avoid UTI’s (Urinary Tract Infections). I am considered high risk and will need to be followed closer than someone with a “normal” pregnancy but that’s fine with me. We will get another ultrasound at 32 weeks to check the kidney's and the amniotic fluid. I am trying my hardest to not stress and enjoy this pregnancy as we had already decided this would be our last. After all this, we still decided to keep the gender a surprise, so we are staying team green. This condition is more predominant in boys, so we are probably having a girl....just saying.
